Ultrasound diagnostics, for the analysis of organs and systems

Ultrasound diagnostics includes a very wide range of examinations, which analyze numerous organs and systems using very specific diagnostic methods: ultrasound and ultrasound Doppler.

At the accredited private hospital Quisisana it is possible to undergo numerous ultrasound scans in Ferrara. And thus obtain an important diagnostic tool to undertake the most suitable treatment path.

How does the ultrasound work?

Ultrasound is a non-invasive and radiation-free diagnostic method that uses ultrasound to analyze the state of organs and tissues.

Longitudinal elastic mechanical waves, with small wavelengths and high frequencies, ultrasounds propagate through the human body (substrate). The density and cohesion forces of the substrate molecules allow the wave to propagate at a more or less high speed. The intrinsic resistance of matter and being crossed by ultrasound, called "acoustic impedance", conditions the speed with which they propagate. The tissues of the human body have all different acoustic impedances.

The ultrasound probe that is placed in contact with the skin contains quartz crystals, capable of generating ultrasounds by high-frequency piezoelectric effect. The higher the frequency of the ultrasounds, the deeper they penetrate: frequencies between 3 and 5 Megahertz are used for the study of organs, frequencies greater than 7.5 Megahertz are used for surface tissues such as the breast.

When the ultrasound encounters an interface (and therefore a passage point with different acoustic impedance), part of the beam is absorbed by the tissues and part goes back (echo), exciting the crystal which in turn generates an electric current. Due to the piezoelectric effect, the ultrasounds are transformed into electrical signals which are then processed by a computer and transformed into images. This is how ultrasound works.

What is seen with ultrasound

Ultrasound allows one to view and analyze the state of health of organs, blood vessels, glands, muscles and tendons. However, it cannot be applied to bone structures, and therefore to the skeleton and structures located inside the skull.

Usually, ultrasound is used to study the abdomen, pelvis, neck, veins, arteries and muscles.

With no contraindications, the ultrasound can be performed by anyone (including pregnant women). There are no preparatory rules, except for ultrasound of the abdomen. In this specific case, it is necessary to follow a light diet in the three days prior to the examination and eliminate the air through tablets or herbal teas available at the pharmacy. In the 6 hours preceding the ultrasound, complete fasting is required.

Services offered at the ultrasound diagnostic service in Quisisana

The ultrasound scans at Quisisana are performed within an excellent facility, characterized by a high selectivity in the choice of its specialists. It is possible to book the exam as a private individual, and therefore for a fee, or access the service through the USL Ferrara with only the payment of the “ticket” fee.
