Cataract surgery

Cataract surgery

Following a specialist examination, it is possible to be referred for cataract surgery.

In our eyes there is the crystalline lens, a lens that enables us to have a clear view of what we are observing. Due to ageing, it can suffer a loss of transparency, or present cataracts, with a gradual loss of vision quality, which can go as far as complete loss of vision if left untreated. To date, surgical treatment of cataracts is in the vast majority of cases curative and painless, and allows for a recovery of clear vision.

The operation is performed in an outpatient surgical clinic, under local anaesthesia, with a healthcare team consisting of the following: surgeon, anaesthetist, instrument nurse and auxiliary staff. The procedure lasts between 15 and 30 minutes, and preoperative preparation at home and at the surgery site is necessary. During the phacoemulsification procedure, the lens opacified by the cataract is removed by ultrasound fragmentation and a biocompatible artificial lens, chosen for the patient on the basis of biometry, is implanted to compensate for the visual deficit created by removing the cataract. At the end of the procedure, the patient will receive instructions and treatment to be followed scrupulously, including the necessary check-ups. After the procedure it is possible to experience: burning, tearing, foreign body sensation in the eye, blurring, headache.
