Field of vision: what it consists of

The visual field examination, also known as perimetry, is a key diagnostic test to assess the eye's sensitivity to perceive objects in the surrounding space, both in central and peripheral vision. It is a simple, non-invasive and painless test, often requested by ophthalmologists to monitor various ocular and neurological pathologies, including:

  • Glaucoma Optic nerve diseases
  • Neurological problems
  • Retinopathies

The examination of the visual field involves different stages:

  1. Anamnesis: general and ocular information
  2. Preparation: The patient is made to sit in front of the instrument and place their chin and forehead on special supports to keep their head still. One eye is covered and the other is tested, for binocular visual fields both eyes are tested simultaneously
  3. Visual test: Inside the perimeter dome, small light spots are projected in different areas of the visual field. The patient has to press a button each time they perceive a light signal.
  4. Duration: The complete examination takes about 20 minutes, but may vary depending on the type of test required.
  5. Results: The software processes the data and produces a visual map showing any areas with loss or reduction of perception. The doctor will analyse these results to draw conclusions about the patient's visual health status.

Is it necessary to prepare?

No special preparation is required. It is advisable to bring along prescription glasses if normally used and the latest eye examination report.
